The NAMI Connections Support Group is the heart of our work at NAMI Northern Nevada. Designed to be peer-led, by and for individuals with mental illness, the Connections Support Group is one of our most popular methods of support. It is ABSOLUTELY FREE, and we never charge anything for working with us. Led by our trained facilitators, you will “gain insight from hearing the challenges and successes of others.”

How do you gain insight? Many of the facilitators and group members have encountered the same problems you have, including problems like;

  • Stress from coping with family and friends who are learning to understand your mental illness.
  • Learning how to work with your health care providers like psychiatrists and therapists.
  • Sharing the experience of mental health treatment with peers who have had similar experiences.
  • Balancing work-life arrangements and managing symptoms in professional environments.

NAMI’s motto is You are never alone, and it can feel pretty lonely without support. But through the NAMI Connections group you can meet and learn from other peers in your area who have the same struggles in a respectful, facilitated group environment. No matter what your experience is with group support, the Connections Support groups always follow “a structured model to ensure you and others in the group have an opportunity to be heard and to get what you need.” In fact, our Group Principles are always public and available for anyone to see. Check them out at the bottom of this page.

What You’ll Gain

By sharing your experiences in a safe and confidential setting, you gain hope and develop supportive relationships. This group allows your voice to be heard, and provides an opportunity for your personal needs to be met. It encourages empathy, productive discussion and a sense of community. You’ll benefit through other’s experiences, discover your inner strength and learn now to identify local resources and how to use them.

NAMI Family Support Group will help you:

  • See the individual first, not the illness
  • Recognize that mental illnesses are medical illnesses that may have environmental triggers
  • Understand that mental illnesses are traumatic events
  • Aim for better coping skills
  • Find strength in sharing experiences
  • Reject stigma and not tolerate discrimination
  • Not judge anyone’s pain
  • Forgive ourselves and reject guilt
  • Embrace humor as healthy
  • Accept that we cannot solve every problem
  • Work for a better future in a realistic way

Both of our support groups follow these group principles:
